Can You Put Marble Countertops in Your Bathroom?

One of the questions we get regularly is can you put marble countertops in a bathroom? Marble has a reputation for being finicky, so while it is a gorgeous material, many people worry that it will get damaged or require too much maintenance to use on their bathroom countertops. But can you really put marble countertops in your bathroom?

Yes… and no

No: Marble may not be the best countertop material for high-use bathrooms (like your master bath where you get ready for work every morning or your kids’ bathroom) for a few different reasons. It etches very easily, which means that acidic substances can eat into the surface and mar it.

Marble is softer and more porous than other natural and engineered stones like granite and quartz. The porousness of the stone also means that marble can trap more bacteria than some other countertop options and it chips more easily as well. Marble should be cleaned with a mild, non-abrasive, and non-acidic cleanser.

Yes: If you want to avoid damaging marble countertops in your bathroom, a guest bathroom or one where the countertops aren’t getting heavy use from young children or makeup-obsessed teens can be a good location.

Marble is a gorgeous and classic material, and despite its delicacy in some ways, it has benefits that make it useful as a bathroom countertop material. One of these is heat resistance—you won’t have to worry if your hair straightener or curling iron accidentally rests on the countertop.
