Quartz Countertops: Pros and Cons

When you think of gorgeous kitchen countertops, you probably think of quartz. It is well-known as a beautiful and functional material for counters. But like all materials, it has its advantages and disadvantages. If you’re considering using quartz for the countertops, whether you’re remodeling, buying or building a new home, here are the pros and cons you should factor into your decision.

Pros Cons
  • Quartz has a beautiful, Carrara marble-like appearance
  • Quartz is available in a wider range of colors than natural stone like marble, granite, or soapstone
  • Quartz is non-porous and resists staining and doesn’t harbor bacteria
  • Because it is a manufactured stone, it is easier to match pattern and color between slabs than it is with natural stone
  • Quartz is scratch resistant, and to a small degree, heat resistant
  • Quartz does not require periodic sealing
  • As an engineered material made of one of the most highly abundant minerals on Earth, quartz is widely available
  • Quartz is well suited to modern or contemporary aesthetics
  • Quartz is a more environmentally friendly option than many natural stone materials because it is made of an abundant material that does not require harmful mining practices
  • Quartz is comparable in price to granite and many other natural stone countertop materials
  • Quartz is made with resin, and so is not as heat resistant as granite and other natural stones
  • As an engineered stone, some find that it doesn’t have the same “natural look” as other natural countertop materials
  • Because of its wide availability, many people use quartz for kitchen countertops—it is not as unique a look as other, less popular materials
  • Quartz countertops sometimes have noticeable seams (as do many other materials)
  • Because of their appearance and performance characteristics, quartz countertops are often at a higher price point than other manufactured countertop materials like laminate
